Debunking the Myth - The Mystery of the Plane Tree - Abbey Green - Bath
If you visit the city of Bath now and happen to walk through Abbey Green, you will be met by the magnificent sight of a fantastic plane tree, which engulfs the surrounding buildings, thriving in the midst of the bustling and busy City.
But this tree, slap bang in the middle of a Bridgerton set is the subject of many a dark spooky tale including the most famous and widely repeated label of it being used for hangings, thus known as the Hanging Tree, there are stories that witches were tortured and hung there too.
So, as you can see, dear Readers, some of these tales seem to be getting more wildly speculative as the years go by.
Being Bath born & bred, to us, it was just the tree in Abbey Green, with no spooky stories, so lets look at the facts, and once and for all get to the bottom of the history of this fantastic tree.
The Stories
It is said that hangings used to take place here and that there is a patch of soil around the base of the tree where nothing will grow, as the tree was used as a gallows...
Someone else told me recently that they were told it was used to torture and hang witches.
Paranormal wise, there was a report of people or someone having seen the apparition of someone hanging here..
History-
Abbey Green is in the centre of the city and used to be within the Abbey boundaries, called the Bath Abbey Quarter, it was used as an orchard and was part of the Abbey grounds.
You can view more historical detail on the link below
Research & Facts-
Most of this can be worked out from the many maps available of the Abbey Green Quarter going back as far as 1100, where the green is shown open, without a main tree in the centre.
A water colour by James Blackamore dated 1785 reveals a large Green surrounded by cobbles but no tree.
Some sources say it was planted as a sapling in 1793 and others say the tree was not actually planted until c1880's
As maps show it was not there in 1852, but first features on the 1888 map.
So it could be from 140 - 230 years old, approximately.
A fantastic photographic resource is the Freshford.com website which has many photographs showing the tree at various stages of its life, being a smallish tree around 1911...
So that particular tree would have been way too small for any hangings, not that they would have taken place in the centre of the city in the late Victorian era..
Recorded hangings in the city took place at Three Holes at Entry Hill , Odd Down and Tog Hill, or at Illchester prison.
Although apparently a John Butler was hanged on the green by the former Hobgoblin pub - in 1780, but this is about 5 minutes walk from Abbey Green on Lower Borough Walls and would have been just roughly the other side of the Medieval City Walls.
There is a story of a witch and the Pigeon Park, but again this was at the City Walls, just down from the area mentioned above.
As for the reason why nothing grows there, in 2017 BANES finally conceded that planting new turf around its base every year was a waste of money as the grass was always dead by the time summer was over.
Instead they are tried something a bit different to find a solution that is more appealing, durable and authentic.
The soil surface has been carefully removed using an air spade to prevent damage to the tree and will be replaced by a self-binding gravel, a type of surface used historically.’
Conclusion -
So its pretty conclusive evidence that the tree there today was not used for hangings or torture etc and that the stories have just come about as a fanciful tale to tell and embellish to scare the tourists, as it looks like the type of tree that may have been used for a hanging.
Thus creating a snowball effect of tales, repeated and embellished over and over, quite possibly more apparent this century with the internet and boost in walking tours around the city.
The alleged sighting of a ghost hanging there is a one off I think, so without multiple accounts of this phenomena, it could be attributed to a shadow, an environmental factor, or maybe too much booze in Bath's many pubs and clubs..
The site has a lot of layers of history going back to the Romans, so its quite possible for there to be some kind of paranormal activity there, be it possibly more residual.
If anyone has witnessed anything or knows of any stories, or who can present any concrete evidence on any further history of the tree, then please feel free to let us know.
