The Admiral of Bennett Street (The Man in the Hat?)
One of the most famous ghost stories and sightings in Bath is that of the 'Man in the Hat' usually spotted around Bennett Street..
The man is thought to be Admiral Arthur Phillip, who was a Royal Navy officer who became the founding Governor of the Colony of New South Wales. (1738-1814)
Phillip suffered a stroke in 1808, which left him partially paralysed.
He died 31 August 1814 at his residence, No 19 Bennett Street, Bath.
He was buried at St Nicholas's Church, Bathampton, although this is subject to some controversy.. (See link below)
The house in Bennett Street is alleged to be haunted by him.
A lady who lived there had frequently seen his ghost, also a servant girl, who had recently entered the service, one day excitedly rushed to her mistress, ex-claiming that there was a gentleman walking about upstairs, dressed in the blue coat, with the breeches, silk stockings, and gold-buckled shoes, of the portrait now in the National Gallery of London. the lady pointed to a miniature upon the mantel-shelf, and asked: ‘Was that the gentleman?’
Of course it was, and the miniature was a portrait of the admiral.
He has also been seen sitting in front of the fire in one of the back downstairs rooms, but fades away when he is spoken to.
He is also said to be the mysterious man in a black hat that is spotted around the Assembly Rooms, which is close to Bennett Street, described as a thin hunched figure wearing a black robe and large black hat.
But this could well be someone else? as the ghost in Bennett Street appears to be residual, and as Admiral Philip was paralysed on one side, he may not have taken to walking around much outside whilst he lived in Bath, so if his ghost is residual, this may well not be him, but another.. but who?
The house also had quite a few people live in it after the Admiral, the Bowie family for about 40 years, so any ghosts in the house more recently could possibly be one of those too..
The house is now flats and it would be really interesting to know if any activity has been experienced in more recent years..
