The Disappearing Gentleman at the Theatre Royal - Bath
This is a story which was told by visitor to Bath, it's not clear what the date was.
The witness was on holiday in Bath and had come to the Theatre Royal to visit his brother-in-law who was a member of the front of house staff.
It was still quite a light evening and was around 10 p.m when this sighting took place.
He was just waiting around with a drink to pass the time watching the people going by outside and was starting to relax and as he went to take a drink, out of the corner of his eye he saw a figure descending the stairs from the Upper Circle.
He turned slightly to see who it was and saw the figure of a man in full evening dress.
The witness didn't know anybody else at the theatre and that as the show was not over yet, just presumed it was just the manager or someone else important.
As the man came into the foyer the witness felt a strange sensation as if something wasn't quite right but couldn't put his finger on it, the whole scene seemed to him to be unreal and a bit strange.
He then turned and looked again and felt a sudden stab of fear as the area was now empty and the man had gone and seemed to have just vanished into thin air!
There was no way that the man could have returned back up the stairs and there is no where else he could have gone in that brief look away.
He later related the story to his relative and it turned out there was already a tale of a disappearing man who had mysteriously vanished on his way to the stalls in 1948, this man had also been wearing full evening dress this and it had never been reported since.
So now for some strange reason it appeared that the ghost had walked again in the presence of the complete stranger to the theatre.
There are a couple of other sightings of a similar apparition walking through the Dress Circle Bar and disappearing in 1997 and in the late 1970s a witness was following someone up the stairs in a dress suit as they reached the turn at the Upper Circle level the man kept walking straight on and vanished through the wall into the Circle Bar
This is where the witness later on in 1997 saw the same figure leaning on the bar.
Thoughts -
It would be really interesting to know of any recent sightings, is it the same apparition? could it be a patron of the theatre repeating his journey through the Theatre and be a residual ghost?
Who is he?
I will have a look at the newspaper archives for 1948 and see if there is anything there.
This post is shared across my Facebook pages and groups, so will update with any new or interesting information.
