The Spirit Riders
The Spirit Riders
This story is about the road from Crewkerne to Chard in Somerset.
The date is unknown, but a man was travelling along this road in Winter in horrendous snow and wind, he arrived at a cottage, where a nervous couple directed him onto Purtington.
Close to a crossroads at Blackmoor Copse, he heard a bloodcurdling scream as a ghostly horse, without a rider came by, followed by another horse.
This one was being ridden by a cloaked figure carrying a pistol, and then a third horse and rider behind that, all racing through the darkness..
On reaching his destination, he told the people what he had witnessed and none seem surprised.
The locals confirmed his sighting by saying of a notorious smuggler who had killed two coastguardsmens, who where the other two spirits in pursuit.
Apparently this residual haunting happens regularly especially on a moonlit winter night....
This is a fabulous story and just imagine being witness to this incredible phenomenon!
Unfortunately there is no clues on the era of this story and it would be great to know if this was still happening or whether the residual energies have faded over time.
Since posting this on my Facebook page, there have been a few comments from locals verifying the story and also saying of its links to Windwhistle Hill and the Inn
Also stories of a lady on white in the area and its known amongst the locals not to use the road alone at night..
I will do a little research into the area and the smuggler and see if there is some fact to back up the story, so watch this space for an update!
At present I am unable to locate a Blackmoor Copse, the road from Crewkerne to Chard, is the A30, so if any locals can shed any light on it at all?
