Holcombe Old Church, also known as The Plague Church.
This beautiful little church is nestled in the tranquil valley in the shadow of the great Downside Abbey.
History-
The church is dedicated to St Andrew and lies outside of the main village of Holcombe, it is widely thought that it stands in the area of the original Holcombe village, which was decimated by the Black Death in 1348.
Its thought that the village suffered such great losses in the plague that the remaining villagers packed up and relocated up the hill to where the current village is now and the village as it was, was buried and lost over time.
Most of the church dates from the 12th century.
The porch is of Norman origin and above the arch is a 16th century carved angel ( which I use on some of my logos)
The tower was developed towards the end of the 14th century.
Archaeological excavations took place in 2012, in the nave, they discovered two rock cut graves which had been used a few times and had the remains of three adults buried at separate times several centuries.
In another grave close by were the remains of an adult and child, 11-12 years old, dating from 18th/19th century and an inscription stone.
There are two Commonwealth War graves and other noteable burials are the Scott family grave with a memorial to Robert Falcon Scott (Scott of the Antarctic) although he is buried in the Antactic.
Also the grave of the Five Lambs, the children who drowned just before Christmas in 1899 up in a frozen pond that was in a field opposite the Holcombe Inn ( see separate blog post for their story) not in the large pond behind the church in the woods, which is what a lot of people are led to believe.
The Church was also used from 2016 for filming Poldark, with many scenes filmed there including weddings and funerals, with Ross Poldark's Aunt Agatha supposedly buried in the church yard, it depicted Saule Church in the series.
Hauntings-
The graveyard is allegedly haunted by the plague victims of the old village
Also monks and dark shadows, the sounds of children playing have also been heard, as well as a the residual sound of a ghostly congregation has been heard singing in the church, when its locked and empty.
A wispy figure was captured by local paranormal group and friend - Frome Paranormal
Thoughts -
This is my special project and I have collected a lot of research and evidence over the last 3 years or so since I started to visit here.
With regards to what is alleged to haunt here, so far, with reference to the plague victims I have yet to find anything to substantiate this, and anything residual would be lost over time.
Same with the monks, so far I have not come across anything.
A lot of people say that they have an uneasy and creepy feeling around the church and don't like it there, but I have never felt anything like this although once it gets dark, it does take on a more creepy air..
As for the reports of children playing, the very first time I visited the church as I was walking through the gate from the churchyard to the woods, I heard a distinct sound of a little girl giggling quite close, which disorientated me as there was no one else there.
That was the start of my falling in love with the place, since then, I hear DVP (Direct Voice Phenomenon) quite often
I have captured many EVP in the churchyard and porch, mainly of the children, a male and an older woman, as well as singing from inside the church, but I feel an affinity with the place now, so maybe that's why I get quite a lot of interaction..
I have only been inside the church a few times when someone has happened to arrive with a key, but not in an investigative way, just to take photos and video of the inside.
My research and collating evidence is ongoing.
