The Martlet Inn - Langford Budville - Wellington - Somerset
History-
Of 17th century origins, there were two public houses in the village, namely the New Inn and the Crown.
The latter survives today, renamed the Martlet Inn in reference to the Sanford coat of arms.
A martlet in English heraldry is a mythical bird without feet that never roosts from the moment of its drop-birth until its death fall; martlets are proposed to be continuously on the wing, thought to be based on a swallow or martin.
Hauntings -
A former resident of the pub called 'Old Tom' is said to haunt the pub and is seen wearing a long coat and tricorn hat.
wooden tables are said to move when the room is emptym doors open and close, laid up tables are found in the mornings all messed up,
things and wine bottles fall off of the shelves.
There is also a spirit dog, thought to be a spaniel that people have felt moving around their legs under the tables.
Thoughts -
Although I cant find anything specific for the pub, it was used for inquests, as were all village pubs at one time, and I found a landlord by the name of William Rich, but not Tom.
The village does have a little bit of a dark past, with a shocking suicide, a mysterious infant death and a human remains found in a field, thought to be of a murdered man.
A farmer and his son were removing topsoil and came across a penny coin dating back to 1767 and then subsequently found the skull of the remains.
According to village elders at the time, there was a row and a fight between several men behind the New Inn and a man disappeared afterwards approximately 40-50 years prior to the discovery.
In 1863 there was the trial of a farmer named Thomas Cork on the charges of aggravated assault on their servant, him and his wife carried out all manner of barbaric and torturous things on the poor woman, he was sentenced to 6 months in gaol.
In 1930 there was a suicide that was discovered by the Martlet Inn's landlord William Rich in his barn, not sure where that would be in relation to the pub?
So on thinking maybe I wouldn't find very much on this little Somerset village, I have come across quite a lot of tragic occurrences.
