Wellsway - The Roman Road - Bath
This seems to be a theme at the moment, each piece of information that comes through to me, either on a post or via messenger seems to be of a road ghost.
Following on from my post a few days ago about ghost sightings in the Odd Down area, which had some great comments, Thank you.
This post is about whether anyone has seen any apparitions or any strange figures over the years on the Wellsway Road or around Rosemary Lodge?
Several people have reported sightings in the area, including a ghostly pair of legs crossing the road in front of them and a lady in white around Rosemary Lodge.
History -
Wellsway or Wells Road (A367) was the Fosseway Roman road out of Bath to the South, so that roadway has been there in some form for centuries.
The area behind Rosemary Lodge was part of the Bath Workhouse grounds, where its said that thousands of bodies were buried over the years.
See separate post on St Martins Hospital and the Bath Workhouse.
In the 1800's there was a pub on it, called The Plough Inn and it was also the main tramway to Odd Down.
There were stone quarries on the Entry Hill side too.
Barrack Farm is thought to be a medieval freehold tenement farm, showing on maps from 1742, during gas mains laying on the new road in 1955, a collection of Roman and medieval pottery was discovered, as well as a stone wall.
It was suggested that a large building, possibly part of the deserted village of Berewick occupied this area in medieval times and there was Roman building on the vicinity.
The name 'Berewick' derives from the Old English word bere-wic, meaning barley farm or village,
It seems that long before the Conquest, it referred to an outlying, sometimes detached part of a Manor.
In this case possibly the Manor of Lyncombe, but there pages of further information on this on the pdf link below.
Thoughts -
The ghostly legs would be residual, just a playback of a moment in time, to view this kind of phenomena, you need to be in the right place at the right time, where the atmospheric conditions are just right, so anyone witnessing anything like this is very lucky.
The apparitions seen around Rosemary Lodge is interesting, are they connected to the workhouse? or are they from an even earlier time, or from more recent years and maybe linked to the Hospital.
I would love to hear of any other sightings, you can message the page if you prefer to be anonymous.
