A Site Of Execution - Ilchester
Illchester Gaol - Illchester - Somerset
It had three sites during it's 700-year existence - first on the west side of what is now the High Street, before moving to the west side of Ilchester Bridge between 1322 and 1429.
Now, only small fragments of the institution remain, but in its heyday up to 270 inmates - men, women and children - were confined behind its walls until it's closure in March 1943
The town was also the appointed scene of executions - these traditionally took place on common ground known as Gallows Field or Gallows Five Acres, up until 1811.
This field - where the A37 now crosses the brook - was the place where criminals from across somerset were bought to die.
Between 1735 and 1799, there were 675 death sentences handed out, which led to almost 200 executions across Somerset.
These are those confirmed to have taken place at Gallows Field in Ilchester
The executions were riotous affairs - with the locals nick-naming them 'hang-fairs' and using them as an excuse to get drunk and have a good time. The scenes of drunken disorder because such that the authorities ordered the gallows to be moved to the gaol, installed on top of the entrance block.
A good view was still to be hand from the wharves across the river or from the bridge, which was packed with spectators on execution days
You can read the full list of executions and the crimes committed on the links below.
This would be a really interesting area to investigate around, the gaol no longer stands, but the ground and energies must still be lingering.
Has anyone ever heard of any hauntings linked to this place of death?
