George & Dragon Pub - Batheaston
History -
Originally a house, The George & Dragon is an 18th Century grade two listed pub at the heart of village of Batheaston around two miles to the east of Bath city centre.
It used to brew its own ale and ceased brewing in 1966.
Up until the early 60's it had been run by the Beaven family of Batheaston for over 100 years.
It was taken over by the Grosvenor Hotel Bath Ltd, who did extensive renovations including putting in place the 1000g beer vat in place for the door, they also found an old well inside too.
Inquests were also held here.
Hauntings-
There is a room known as Annie's Room, where Annie is said to have hung herself, she is said to haunt the pub.
Footsteps are heard when the building is locked and empty and something can be spotted moving in peripheral vision as well.
Thoughts & Research -
I cant find much in the history of the pub, so if anyone knows anything which can be added to the account, that would be great.
Further research into Annie to follow.
So far I have found a manslaughter case, kind of on the premises, see newspaper article below, where a lady got into an argument with her nephew whilst they were out for the evening, he threw an earthenware mug at her which hit her in the face, which resulted in her passing from her injuries, this was in 1858.
A local source tells me that the building was probably 13/14 Stambridge Place, I have found a Miss Anne Webb, a dressmaker that lived at No 15 from 1866, is this Annie? (see picture below)
