The Friendly Spirit Pub - Cannington
The Friendly Spirit Pub - Cannington
History -
Originally called The Anchor, Blue Anchor or Old Blue Anchor, was recorded in 1767 and was kept by the May family until the 1840s.
It was renamed The Friendly Spirit in 1986.
The pub stands in the area of Cannington Priory, which was a Benedictine nunnery established around 1138 and dissolved in 1536.
It was attached to the Church of St Mary and was first populated by Benedictine nuns (from Dorset), who were later transferred to Colwich Abbey.
The building was converted into a mansion but later reverted to being a nunnery.
It was disestablished as part of the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1536.
Cannington Court incorporates some of the remains.
Hauntings-
The ghost of one of the nuns from the Priory Maude de Merriete is said to haunt the pub, seen in upstairs rooms, kitchen and corridors.
She was beaten to death for disobeying holy orders, her remains were buried on site and her heart buried in the church at Combe Florey, where there is a heart shrine in the wall.
One of the bedrooms is said to always have a chill and possibly a 'ghost cat' has been felt walking across beds at night.
Thoughts -
The church website states the following about the heart shrine-
The Lombardic inscription above the shrine reads ‘Le quer dame Maud de Merriete, nun of Cannington’.
Although the family name, de Merriete, is the same there is no connection between this heart shrine and Mary the first wife of Sir John.
The lady whose heart was buried here was Maud, and not Mary and, as she was a nun, she was probably buried in Cannington Priory.
In addition, the practice of heart burial was not uncommon in medieval times amongst noble and knightly families, the object being to obtain additional prayers for the deceased by burying the body in one church and the heart in another.
The practice was forbidden by Pope Boniface VIII (1294-1301), but was later sanctioned again.
It would be interesting to know if hundreds of years later whether the spirit has a presence, or whether its someone else from the pubs past.
